EDUCATING THE CONCRETE INDUSTRY

Educating the concrete industry and specifying community about the advantages of composite reinforcement is one of the core values of the FRP Institute. We have assembled some of the leading experts in the science and engineering of FRP reinforcement and we are conducting educational seminars throughout North America for DOT personnel, engineering firms and others interested in FRP technology. Contact the FRP Institute to learn more and visit our Resources section for technical information.

Here is an example of one of the FRP Institute’s educational courses. We are continually updating and expanding our presentations to include the latest standards and technical information. The History of Externally Bonded FRP provides a broad technical overview of the material and includes case studies and best practices.

FRP Institute Education Course

History of Externally Bonded FRP

This training presentation starts with a review of the basic applications of externally bonded FRP as defined by full-and-large-scale testing spanning back to the early 1990’s. The testing illustrates the potential performance increase, detailing requirements and design principles for columns, tee beams, AASHTO and box-girders.

The presentation then addresses how to define the material properties of various FRP materials with a more detailed design discussion for structural strengthening as compared to environmental protection to prolong the life of structural elements. While reviewing actual case studies the focus is then placed on the installation inspection and required field quality control needed to achieve a successful installation. These lessons learned over the years will then illustrate the best practices and special provision wording that has been successfully implemented by various DOTs to achieve not only the required structural performance but also the required protective finish and aesthetics needed for various locations and exposure conditions.
